Mobile Phone Users Lightning Strike Risk
|
Doctors warned that people should not use mobile phones outdoors during thunderstorms becuase of the risk of being struck by lightning. A reported case tells about a 15 year old girl who was struck by lightning while using her mobile phone. She was revived but suffered persistent health problems and started using a wheelchair a year after the incident. This raises the public awareness that using mobile phones outdoors could have a fatal consequence. When a person is struck by lightning, the high resistance of the skin conducts the flash over the body which is known as a flashover. However if a metal object such as a mobile phone is in contact with the skin, this disrupts the flashover and increases the odds of internal injuries and death. |
The doctors also added that three fatal cases of lightning striking people while using mobile phones has been reported in newspaper in China, South Korea and Malaysia.
