Mobile Phone Users Lightning Strike Risk

Mobile Phone Thunderstorm

Doctors warned that people should not use mobile phones outdoors during thunderstorms becuase of the risk of being struck by lightning. A reported case tells about a 15 year old girl who was struck by lightning while using her mobile phone. She was revived but suffered persistent health problems and started using a wheelchair a year after the incident. This raises the public awareness that using mobile phones outdoors could have a fatal consequence. When a person is struck by lightning, the high resistance of the skin conducts the flash over the body which is known as a flashover. However if a metal object such as a mobile phone is in contact with the skin, this disrupts the flashover and increases the odds of internal injuries and death.

The doctors also added that three fatal cases of lightning striking people while using mobile phones has been reported in newspaper in China, South Korea and Malaysia.
